Welcome to the month of May, our month of “Repositioning for Excellence”. We often think of the word reposition in terms of changing or altering where or how someone or something is placed or arranged. This, for the most part is true…. In 1 Chronicles 13, we learn that king David was afraid of the ark of the covenant and instead of taking it home with him, had it repositioned in the house of Obededom. Another example that readily comes to mind is that of Mephibosheth, the only surviving son of Jonathan who had spent most of his early life in Lodebar but was repositioned to live in Jerusalem with the king, 2 Samuel 9.
Repositioning is an integral part of our everyday lives. We are constantly repositioning furniture, utensils, our wardrobe and even relocate our families from time to time. Something about that new arrangement gives a sense of a fresh start.
Of course, there are some of us that don’t like change and associate stability with familiarity. This was true of the children of Israel who struggled with the exodus because of all the changes it demanded. They relished the food and the comfort, forgetting that it was all embedded in the conditionality of slavery, Exodus 11: 5-6.
I would be the first to admit that repositioning can be challenging, for the mere fact that it is a deliberate call to move from a place of familiarity to a place of uncertainty. God said to Abram in Genesis 12: 1 – “Get out of your country, from your family, and from your father’s house and go to a land that I will show you”. God did not take this request lightly and said if you do this, “I will bless you and make you a blessing”.
When God calls us to reposition, He is not necessarily calling us to change our physical location but often times, He is calling us to take on a new posture. God is calling on the church to ariseand shine and position itself as a leader in our communities. He is calling on Christians to be moral and ethical flag bearers in our homes, at our jobs or businesses and in our social circles.We are to approach every battle and every challenge not from the position of fear or defeat but from the position of victory.God has already provided everything we need to succeed in His son Jesus Christ. Instead of running from Him, how about we run to Him.
David was afraid of the ark of the covenant because he saw firsthand what it was capable of, 2 Samuel 6: 1-7. He understood the significance of the ark and that it carried with it the presence of God but fear led him to position himself as far away from the ark as possible. But thankfully, David would later realize that the best position to be is in the presence of God, 2 Samuel 24: 14.
This month I want to encourage us all to reposition ourselves in the presence of God and trust God to reposition our lives into the best version it can ever be. God bless.
